The Ambuklao Hydroelectric Plant is the Philippines’ first hydroelectric plant. It is located in the mountains of Bokod, Benguet and is about 36 kilometers northeast of Baguio City. The plant was
commissioned by National Power Corporation in 1956 with an installed capacity of 75 MW. In July 1990 a major earthquake centered at the nearby town of Baguio caused landslides to occur in the Ambuklao area. This caused a large amount of silt to flow into the reservoir, which covered the intake tower, leading to shut down of the plant. The plant generation capacity was partially restored in 1995, although the plant was again shut down in 1999 and has been out of operation since. The units will be returned to service between August and November 2010.
